New trends of ski holidays

In the 70s, it was fashionable to spend a holiday in the mountains in small studios where you had to step over the bed of the neighbour to access the toilet before starting a day of non-stop of skiing.

Fortunately, things have changed. Today, many tourists spend some time in their property and want to feel pampered.

This is true for French tourists but also for English or other Europeans who frequent French ski resorts.

Nowadays, those who go to the mountains for the holidays do not ski from the opening of the slopes to their closure; many tourists do not even set foot in a ski boot.

For most of these tourists, the day takes place mainly at home, which is why the size and comfort of the apartments have become essential.

Statistical data indicates that buyers invest on average in 50 square meter apartments and those who prefer the comfort of a chalet to feel alone in the world are looking for an even larger surface.

“In a mountain resort, the well-being and comfort of family stays are now an integral part of the purchase of a property”, confirms Jean-Jacques Botta, president of Fnaim de Savoie Mont-Blanc, interviewed by Le Figaro

Those who become owners of a mountain lodge, acquire an average area of 130 square meters. Small studios are no longer favoured by buyers who cannot stand to feel constrained in tight spaces.

The purchases mainly concern one or two bedroom apartments, who now account for more than half of the property transactions according to Fnaim de Savoie Mont-Blanc. Even larger apartments with four or more bedrooms are less sought after by buyers, mainly due to the budget required.

The groups and property developers who design, build, manage and renovate tourist residences have long been aware of this trend. During the renovation, it is not uncommon for two studios to be brought together to create a larger apartment that will be more easily rented.

The studio owners, however, do not despair anyway. There is a clientele of holidaymakers with limited budgets who will agree to spend a week in 25 square meters while enjoying a holiday in the mountains.
